Postpartum Depression
PPD is common after childbirth. Symptoms of depression include :
• Nervousness along with anxiety
• Getting exhausted
• Feeling hopelessness
• Very less appetite
• Poor concentration
• Memory loss
• Confusion
• Over-concern for baby
• Crying more
• Lack of interest in baby
Treatment options include group or individual psychotherapy. One needs to understand that this is because of the hormonal changes that take place in the woman’s body. The mood swing and extreme emotions may be at time frightening or you may feel that she is overacting but it is not so. Speak about this to your doctor. Estrogen is prescribed for few women as a part of treatment. Any thought of suicide or any harm towards the child must not be left without proper psychiatric counseling.
